Description

Control and automation of waste water treatment plants involve multidisciplinary knowledge spanning from advanced automation techniques for controlling and monitoring the chemical processes, to IT methodologies and infrastructures for acquiring, processing and storing relevant data. Combining such elements is crucial to maximize the efficiency of the plants and reducing energy consumption. This project combines such elements developing innovative methodologies for treating waste water, IT infrastructure for acquiring and monitoring data as well as intelligent control techniques to build decision support systems.

Objectives

  1. Implement a new logic for controlling the water treatment process to reduce energy consumption

  2. Apply Life Cycle Assessment methodologies and evaluate carbon footprint to minimize environmental impact

  3. Implement a new ICT system for monitoring and control to reduce costs, optimize usability

Results

Novel ICT solution: based on wireless technology, reduced deployment costs, better scalability, better usability

New control process: based on how key parameters change over time, reduces energy consumption and environmental impact
