Biography

Manuele Bicego received his Laurea degree in Computer Science from University of Verona (Italy) in 1999. From the same university, in 2003, he received the PhD degree in Computer Science, with a thesis titled "Hidden Markov Models for Pattern Recognition and Computer Vision: methodological issues and applications" - advisor Prof. Vittorio Murino. From 2000 to 2003 he worked in VIPS (Vision, Image Processing and Sound) laboratory of the Computer Science Department of University of Verona (Italy). From 2004 to May 2005 he was a PostDoc Fellow at the University of Sassari (Italy). From June 2005 to September 2008 he was assistant professor (ricercatore) at the University of Sassari (Italy). With the same position he is now with the University of Verona (Italy), member of the VIPS (Vision, Image Processing and Sound) laboratory at the Computer Science Dept. From June 2009 to February 2011 he was also team leader and member of the PLUS (Pattern analysis, Learning and image Understanding Systems) lab at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT - Genova Italy).

In Sept-Dec 2001 and in Nov-Dec 2009 he visited the Pattern Recognition and Telecommunications Laboratory of the Istituto Superior Tecnico, Lisbon (Portugal). In Oct-Dec 2006 he visited the Center for Mathematics and Computer Science, Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and at the Information and Communication Theory Group of the Delft University of Technology, Delft (The Netherlands). In January 2007 he visited the Bogazici University, Istanbul (Turkey). In May-June 2008 he visited the Vigo University, Vigo (Spain). Currently he is visiting the Department of Informatics and Computing at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia Sede Manizales (Colombia).

He is member of the Editorial board of the Electronic Letters on Computer Vision and Image Analysis (Jan 2004 - ) and of the International Journal of Imaging (Jul 2008 - ). He served as Guest Editor of the special issue of the international journal Pattern Recognition on "Similarity-based Pattern Recognition" (vol 39(10) - 2006). He was Demo Chair of the 3rd IAPR International Conference on Biometrics (ICB 2009), Alghero (Italy), 2-9 June 2009 and Invited speaker chair of the Int. Conf. on Pattern Recognition in Bioinformatics (PRIB 2011). From 2006 he has been a member of the Scientific/Program/Technical Committee of many different international conferences on Pattern Recognition, Computer Vision and Bioinformatics; he served as reviewer for more than 20 internation journals, and for different international conference and workshops.

Statistical Pattern Recognition: probabilistic graphical models (Hidden Markov Models, mixtures, topic models), unsupervised classification (clustering and biclustering), kernel methods (generative kernels, generative embeddings)

Computer Vision: shape classification, video analysis

Biometrics: face recognition and authentication, face analysis, feature extraction

Bioinformatics: expression microarray analysis, phylogeny, odor classification, NMR spectra analysis
